Complaint
TFDA is imposing new requirements on export of BRARUDI beers into Tanzania. TFDA is requesting new labels to include additional information and storage condition for the product that was not required when they submitted the application for export.
Status note
Burundi reported that TFDA had finally registered Burundi beers and that the company had received its certificate of registration.
Progress update note
1. On 13th March 2015, Tanzania focal point reported that in their consultations with TFDA to understand the issues surrounding delays in processing BRARUDI application for registration, TFDA reported that BRARUDI had not fully complied to the registration requirement. The company was requested to submit complying samples which they have not done up to now thereby delaying the process. TFDA acknowledged that the beer had been initially registered through third party exporters and therefore registration by manufacturer, should not pause a problem if all requirements are met. TFDA indicated that the requirements met by third party exporters to obtain registration were the same demanded from all exporters of beer into Tanzania. TFDA reported that they are willing to cooperate on this issue and that the ball was in BRARUDI’s court top comply with the requirements. TFDA mentioned that the samples labelling should comply with TZS, Codex Stan or DEAS 2013.

2. This NTB is imposed to Burundi and Kenya. Two companies are exporting BRARUDI beers in Tanzania before the new requirements. The Burundi NMC meeting held on 9th march, 2015 recommend that TFDA can look how to resolve the matter. In the mean time EABC is organizing workshops on standards to consider the registration and labeling issues.
