Egypt's National Monitoring Committee received a complaint from Chemicals and Fertilizers Exporting Company that the cost of shipment between Egypt and the eastern countries in Africa is very high. In addition east African countries prefer that the shipment companies ship fruits rather than chemicals. And hence a suggestion was made to hold a meeting between transport syndicates especially of the landlocked countries in COMESA and the business community in an attempt to reach a solution.
please consider the above mentioned suggestion. - Status note
- On 8th February 2016, Egypt Focal point reported that the NTB be considered closed on the basis that Egypt's National Monitoring Committee did not receive any details from the Exporting Company.
- Progress update note

1. On 08 January 2015, Egypt Focal point reported that they were awaiting feedback from the concerned private sector companies providing detailed and more specific data about this issue. Egypt undertook to provide details once received from the private sector.
2. Focal points from Rwanda and Kenya requested Egypt to clarify the complaint by stating if any company from Egypt shipping chemicals was stopped, when, where and by who (in EAC) to be able to investigate and provide feedback.
Further, Kenya Focal points suggested that the preference by shipping companies to ferry fruits rather than chemicals could be explained better by the companies and that it was most likely to be associated with strict regulations for transporting the same.
The focal points proposed that the complainant should try to give more details on what reasons are cited by East African countries and which countries in particular preferred shipping companies to ferry fruits rather than chemicals and why. This is in view of the possible different dimensions responsible for these developments. Focal point further suggested that the national monitoring Committee of Egypt must get more detailed information on this issue and get views on the same from Egypt's representative of the East Africa shippers Council ( details can be obtained by focal point in Kenya comment in the system ) to understand more. - Policy or regulatory NTB
