The rationale of the measure

These regulations shall apply only to condiments which are sold or intended for sale in Zimbabwe.

Description of the measure

7 (1) Ginger shall—
(a) be composed of the washed and dried or decorticated and dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale;
(b) not contain—
(i) any exhausted or partly exhausted ginger;
(ii) any foreign vegetable or mineral matter other than calcium carbonate and calcium sulphate;
(iii) more than 1% of added calcium compound, calculated as CaO; and
(iv) more than 10% moisture; and

(c) not yield more than 7% of ash, of which not less than 1,5% shall be soluble in cold water.
(2) Limed ginger or bleached ginger shall—
(a) be composed of whole ginger coated with carbonate of lime;
(b) not yield more than—
(i) 10% of ash; or
(ii) 4% of calcium carbonate;
but in all other respects shall conform to the standards prescribed in subsection (1).
(3) Ground ginger shall—
(a) be prepared from either ginger or limed ginger;
(b) conform to the standards prescribed in subsection (2);
(c) be free from any foreign substance.
