Description of the measure
5. Food with decrease sodium content
No person shall import, manufacture, process, pack, store, offer for sale or sell any food whose sodium content has been decreased or eliminated, unless the label on the package of the food bears the appropriate terminology for the following quantitative standards in respect of element of sodium -
(a) "Sodium free" not more than 5 milligrams per 100 grams;
(b) "Very low sodium" not more than 35 milligrams per 100 grams;
(e) "Low sodium" not more than 140 milligrams per 100 grams; (d) "Reduced sodium" processed to reduce the usual level of sodium by 75 per cent;
(e) "Unsalted" processed without sodium chloride;
(f) "No salt added" should express the natural sodium content in milligram per 100 grams.

Description of the measure
6. Low calorie food
(1) No person shall import, manufacture, process, pack, store, offer for sale or sell any food labelled -
(a) "LOW CALORIE" unless the food contains not more than 40 calorie per
100 grams of food;
(b) "REDUCED CALORIE" unless the calorie content of the food is one third lower than the calorie content of the food to which it is compared; and
(c) "DIET" or "DIETIC PRODUCT" unless the product complies with the standards specified in paragraph (2).
(2) "DIET" or "DIETIC PRODUCT" shall -
(a) comply with the requirements for low or reduced calorie food;
(b) be clearly described as being useful for special dietary purposes; and
(c) not make any claim to the effect that the food is guaranteed to maintain or reduce body weight.

Description of the measure
185. Special labelling requirements for low energy food
No person shall import, manufacture, pack, store, offer for sale or sell any low energy food for an infant or a child unless, in compliance with regulation 3, the label specifically mentions the following -
(a) the words "LOW ENERGY FOOD";
(b) the total weight and separate percentages of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in the package;
(c) the total energy value of the food in the package, or in each 100 grams of the food or where the food is in liquid form, in each 100 ml;
(d) details of the claim on which special suitability is based;
(e) an indication that the use of such low energy foods requires medical advice or supervision or as recommended by a dietician; and
(f) the expiry date, to which special attention shall be drawn.

187. Special labelling requirements for formula dietary food
No person shall import, manufacture, process, pack, store, offer for sale or sell any formula dietary food unless, in compliance with regulation 3, the label specifically mentions the following -
(a) the words "FORMULA DIETARY FOOD";
(b) a statement of the quantity of the food to be consumed in one day;
(c) a statement of the energy yield, expressed in kilo-calorie or kilo-joule, of that quantity of the food;
(d) the proportion of protein, fat, and carbohydrate in the food; and
(e) an indication that the use of such formula dietary food requires medical advice, medical supervision or as recommended by a dietician.

No person shall import, manufacture, process, pack, store or offer for sale or sell edible oil or fat unless in compliance with regulation 3, the label -
(a) mentions the words "COOKING OIL" or "BLENDED COOKING OIL";
(b) bears the appropriate terminology for the following quantitative standards -
(i) "CHOLESTEROL FREE" - less than 2 milligrams of cholesterol per 100 grams of oil or fat and not less than 45% unsaturated fat;

- not more than 25% saturated fat; and

(ii) "LOW CHOLESTEROL" - less than 20 milligrams of cholesterol per
per 100 grams of oil or fat.

113. Conditions of sale of salt and labelling
(a) No person shall sell edible salt otherwise than in a pre-packed container.
(b) A container under paragraph (a) of this section shall bear a label which, in addition to the requirements of regulation 3, shall conspicuously indicate -

Description of the measure: 14. Package inserts
Every package of a medicinal product shall, unless otherwise directed by the Board, contain a package insert on which is printed in clear and indelible letters in the English language and any other language as may be directed or approved by the Board the following particulars which relate to medicinal product—
(a) the name and address of the owner of the medicinal product;
(b) the name and address of the manufacturer of the medicinal product;
(c) the approved name of the active ingredient of the medicinal product and the proprietary name or trade mark, if any, of the medicinal product;
(d) the logo, if any, of the owner of the medicinal product or manufacturer of the medicinal product;
(e) the name and percentage of any bacteriostatic or bactericidal agent which is added to the medicinal product as a preservative;
(f) the strength of the medicinal product, where applicable;
(g) the required storage conditions or other necessary precautions for the preservation of the medicinal product;
(h) the category of distribution of the medicinal product which may be represented by words or symbols as set out in the Third Schedule;
(i) the pharmacological classification of the medicinal product determined in accordance
with regulation 11;
(j) the dosage of the medicinal product and the directions for use;
(k) the description of the pharmacological action of the medicinal product;
(l) indications of the medicinal product;
(m) contra-indications of the medicinal product;
(n) warnings relating to the use of the medicinal product;
(o) the side-effects and special precautions of the medicinal product;
(p) known symptoms of over-dosage and particulars of its treatment;
(q) the identification of the medicinal product;
(r) the form in which the medicinal product is presented, whether tablet, capsule or liquid
and the colour thereof;
(s) the date of publication of the package insert;
(t) any necessary warning concerning the administration or use of the medicinal product by
children, old people, pregnant women or patients suffering from certain diseases, or the use of the
medicinal product in conjunction with the consumption of alcohol or any particular food or any other
medicinal product;
(u) a summary of relevant information concerning the purpose and the beneficial,
detrimental, injurious or other effects of the medicinal product, and the possible dangers that may arise
from the prolonged use of the medicinal product;
(v) relevant information, including particulars in regard to a specific medicinal product as an
antidote (if known), concerning the treatment of a patient in cases where an overdose of the medicinal
product has been administered or where a patient reacts adversely to the medicinal product; and
(w) any other particulars or warning notices as may be directed by the Board.

Description of the measure
3.(1) All iodized salt packages shall be legibly and indelibly labelled and the salt in each package shall conform to the specifications on its label.
(2) A label on an iodized salt package shall contain the following information-
IODIZED SALT
Name of manufacturer, importer or packer;
Name of Iodization plant;
Iodine compound (potassium iodate) level of iodine or potassium-mg/kg;
Best used before date;
CAUTION: STORE IN A COOL AND DRY PLACE.
(3) All salt iodized or prepacked in Malawi shall bear a certification mark of Malawi Bureau of Standards which shall be displayed prominently on the package in which the salt is contained.
(4) For avoidance of doubt, the provisions of sub-paragraph (3) are in addition to, not in substitution for, the provisions of the Malawi Bureau of Standards Act and any other written law governing issuance of certification marks.

8. Misbranded milk and milk products
(1) Milk and milk products shall be deemed to be misbranded if the container or any label
affixed thereto is not clearly printed in plain legible characters of not less than 10 point type with the
following information—
(a) the class of milk or milk product contained therein in accordance with these
Regulations;
(b) the word “pasteurized”, if the contents have been pasteurized;
(c) the word “standard” or “standardized” if the contents have been standardized;
(d) the percentage of milk fat if the contents are cream of low fat cream; and
(e) the identity of the plant at which the contents were processed and pasteurized.
