- Article 3: General labelling requirements
General labelling requirements of food supplements are: food supplements shall not be described or presented on any label or in any labelling in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character in any respect;
food supplement shall be labelled in such a way that does not in any way, either directly or indirectly, purport to prevent, diagnose, treat or cure any disease;
food supplement shall be labelled in such a way that does not imply that it can be used for the replacement of meals or varied diet; the label of food supplement shall contain a cautionary statement where applicable adverse effects or risks of excessive intake, contraindications, any warning and precautions associated with the use of the
product and instruction that the product should be stored out of reach of children.
Article 4: Product name
Every container of any food supplement shall be affixed with a label bearing in clear, legible and indelible letters in at least one of the official languages of the Republic of Rwanda, the brand or trade name of the product.
Every container of any food supplement shall identify the product as dietary supplement or describe the type of supplement preceded by the name of the dietary ingredients.
Article 5: List of ingredients
Except for single ingredient food supplements, a list of ingredients shall be declared on the label with the corresponding quantities per specified unit of measure.
All ingredients shall be listed in descending order by weight at time of manufacture of food supplement.
Labelling must include the quantity per intake for each ingredient, the form and source.
Additives or ingredients such us fillers, artificial colours, sweeteners, flavours or binders shall be listed by their specific names and qualified by words “natural” or “artificial” in descending order in weight or volume.
Article 6: Nutritional information.
Label(s) must declare, in numerical form, the amount of nutrients present in the product per portion of the product as recommended for daily consumption or amount per unit for single use.
The net contents shall be declared in the metric system by weight for solid or powdered products, volume for liquid or number for tablets and capsules.
Article 7: Packaging Particulars
The package shall contain the name and address of the manufacturer including country of origin of the food supplement.
Each product shall be permanently marked in code or in clear expression to identify the producing factory and the batch/lot number.
All product labels shall be permanently marked with date of manufacture and expiry, which shall indicate at least the month and year.
Appropriate storage conditions recommended for the product shall be declared.
Clear and concise instruction for use (quantity, frequency, age group, special conditions…) and amounts to be taken daily shall be included on the label to ensure correct utilization of the product.
State any precautions to be observed when using the food supplements.

- 4. Any person shall not sell a manufactured, processed and preplaced or packed food unless a label has been affixed or applied to the container of that food.
5-(1) The level applied to a food shall carry-
(a) On the main panel
(i) The brand or trade name of that food;
(ii) The common name of the food;
(iii) The net contents in terms of weight, volume or number in accordance with the usual practices, in describing the food;
(iv) In case of imitated or substituted food items, explicitly written immediately adjacent and before the common name, words “imitated” or “substituted”
(v) Batch or lot number of that food and expiry date or end of shelf life.
(vi) Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-regulation 1(a) V of this regulation, declaration of self-life may be placed on any other panel of the label provided a statement is made on the main panel to direct users on the placement of the dates.
(b) Grouped together on any panel
(i) A declaration by name of permitted food clour added to the food;
(ii) A declaration by name of any preservative used in the food;
(iii) A declaration by name of any artificial or imitation flouring preparation added to the food;
(iv) In the case of a food consisting of more than one ingredient, a complete list of their acceptable names in descending order of their proportions unless the quantity of each ingredient is stated in terms of percentages or proportion compositions; and
(v) Any other statement required under provisions of the regulations to be declared on the label;
(c) On any panel and of adequate size explicitly written, a declaration of addition or abstraction of any food constituents; and
(d) On any panel the name and address of the manufacturer or manufacturer and distributor of the food.
6. – (1) any statement, information or declaration that is required by any regulation made under these regulations to appear on the label of any food shall be in Kiswahili, English or both;
(2) any language may be used in labelling of food provided that language is used together with Kiswahili. English or both.
7 Any information appearing in label of any food product shall be
(a) Clearly and prominently displayed on a label;
(b) Readily discernible to the purchase or consumer under the customary conditions of purchase and use; and
(c) Distinctly and legibly printed to state whether or not there has been addition or abstraction of any substance to that food or the food which has been repacked.
8. Grade designated and pictorial information on the label shall be relevant to the food substance, readily understood and not misleading deceptive or false describing a food.
9 any food which has been treated with ionizing radiation shall be so designated on the label
10. where an ingredient of a food has more than one component, the name of all the components shall be included in the list of ingredients
11-(1) Any imported food shall bear a label on its container declaring the country of origin of such imported food.
(2) where a food undergoes processing in a second country and such processing changes its nature, the country in which the processing was done shall, for the purpose of sub-regulation (1) of this regulation be considered to be the country of origin.
12 No direct or indirect references to the Act or to these regulations or to the authority shall be made on any label of or in any declaration for a food.
13 A food containing nonnutritive sweetener shall carry on the label a statement to the effect that it contains such artificial sweeteners by naming the synthetic sweetener
14 –(1) These regulations shall not prevail over labelling requirements prescribed under specific food product standards
(2) a declaration of expiry date shall not be required for wines, sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fruit wines and sparkling fruit wines, beverages containing ten percent or more by volume alcohol, vinegar, sold sugars, confectionary products consisting of floured coloured sugar or chewing gum.
15 Any person who-
(a) Contravenes or fails to comply with these regulations; or
(b) Directly or indirectly aids another person in committing an offence under these regulations, commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both such fine and imprisonment. - Reference of the measure

- 20.-(1)Every registered plant protection substance, distributed, sold, offered or exposed for sale shall bear on the container thereof, in understandable Kiswahili and English, a distinguishing name, a true description of its active ingredients in relation to its net weight or volume, a list of crops that it is to be applied to, a description of precautions to be taken on its use, instructions on disposal of used plant protection substance containers and information on disposal of spills, any appropriate warning symbols or pictograms, the registration number, the name and address of the holder of the registration certificate or, of the provisional clearance, the formulation and "use before" date, batch number and the., name of the registration authority.
28. Plant resistance improvers shall only be used if:
(a) they have no harmful effects on the health of man, animals and improvers
the environment;
(b) have been registered and published in the Gazette;
(c) have been labelled according to section 20 of this Act
(2) Any person who distributes, sells, offers or exposes for sale any registered plant protection substance which does not conform with the requirement of this section or of any regulation made under the requirement of this Act, shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine of not less than two million shillings but not exceeding ten

- 17-(1) Labeling and marking of infant formula and supplementary foods shall be in accordance with Tanzania standard 187 and Tanzania standard 180 respectively.
(2) Labels and marks on any infant formula shall include the following information in kiswhili, English and any other language where the product is marketed-
(a) Name of the products that is infact formula and trade name or brand name;
(b) Name and address of the manufacturer or licensed packer;
(c) Batch or code number;
(d) Net content by mass/volume;
(e) List of ingredients with the average content of each nutrient indicated in descending order of proportion;
(f) Protein source and the proportion of saturated and unsaturated farry acids;
(g) The average content of each nutrient;
(h) Directions for storing the unopened container and special directions after the container has been opened.
(i) An indication., with a print letter not less than 5 mm that infant formula is not intended to replace breast feeding but is a complement where breast feeding is insufficient;
(j) The words “ IMPORTANT NOTICE” or their equivalent, directing on how to prepare and use the formula for consumption and shall include:
(i) A statement of the superiority breast feeding;
(ii) A statement that the product shall be used only on the advice of a doctor or health worker;
(iii) Instruction and a warning against the health hazard of inappropriate proportion;
(iv) A statement that infants shall be fed only with cup and or spoon;
(v) Advisory note that infants over 6 months of age should require supplementary foods in addition to the formula.
(vi) Date of manufacturer and expirely to be printed in a tamper proof on the container;
(vii) Country of origin
