(bb) grown in the open, is 200 mm; or

- 2. (1) No person shall, subject to the provisions of subregulation (2), sell dried fruit for human consumption in the Republic of South Africa -
(c) unless the containers in which such product is packed, comply with the requirements referred to in regulation 6;
(d) unless such product is packed in accordance with the packing requirements referred to in regulation 7;
Requirements for containers and outer containers
6. (1) Containers and outer containers containing dried fruit shall -
(a) be manufactured of a material suitable for the packing and transport of dried fruit;
(b) be clean, durable, sound and safe;
(c) not pass on to the dried fruit any odour, taste, colour or other foreign characteristics during storage or distribution or display of the dried fruit; and
(d) be properly closed and sealed.
Packing Requirements
7. (1) Unless provided elsewhere in these regulations, dried fruit of different grades shall not be packed in the same container.
(2) The top layer or the visibly packed outer layer of dried fruit in a container shall truly resemble the quality of the dried fruit in that container.
(3) Whenever dried fruit is sold in loose quantities, no quantity of a particular grade, size group, count or cultivar, as the case may be, shall be displayed mixed with dried fruit of another grade, size group, count or cultivar with the exception of mixed dried fruit as prescribed in these regulations:
Provided that the grade, kind and type of dried fruit shall be displayed, in clear legible printed letters of at least 50 mm in height, on a notice board or label prominently placed in the immediate proximity
(4) Before an unspecified dried fruit is packed for sale -
(a) proposed quality standards shall be submitted in writing to the Executive Officer; and
(b) written permission shall be obtained from the Executive Officer. - Reference of the measure

(2) Scorzonera shall be packed and sorted according to length and maximum diameter measured at right angles to the axis of the root.
(3) The minimum length and minimum diameter for Class 1 is 220 mm and 15 mm, respectively.
(4) The minimum length and minimum diameter for Class 2 is 150 mm and 12 mm, respectively.
(5) The maximum difference in length and diameter in the same package or bunch in the case of Class 1 shall not exceed the following:
(a) 100 mm in length: Provided that in the case of roots presented in punnets or bunches it may not exceed 50 mm in length; and
(b) 15 mm in diameter.
Permissible deviations with regard to packing and sorting requirements
(7) Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 scorzonera may deviate from the packing and sorting requirements set out in subregulations 2 to 5, with 10%, 15% and 25% respectively by number: Provided that no Scorzonera with a minimum length and minimum diameter of less than 120 mm and 10 mm respectively is permissible. - Reference of the measure

(6) (a) Sweet corn, except in the case of miniature corn, shall be packed and sorted according to the length of the cob.
(b) The maximum cob length in the case of Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 sweet corn is 300 mm.
(c) The minimum cob length in the case of ;
(i) Class 1 sweet corn is 140 mm; and
(ii) Class 2 sweet corn is 120 mm.
(7) Sweet corn shall be uniform in the same packing in respect of diameter, length and the
cut at the base of the cob: Provided that the cut at the base shall be clean and only on the one side of
the cob.
(8) Sweet corn shall be packed separately in the case of shaped and unshaped ends.
(9) Sweet corn with leaves and stamens, without cover or partially covered shall be packed separately.
(10) (a) Miniature corn shall be packed and sorted according to cob diameter (measured at the base) and cob length.
(b) The minimum diameter is 8 mm and the maximum diameter 20 mm.
(c) The maximum difference in diameter between the smallest and largest miniature corn in the same packing shall not exceed 5 mm.
(d) The minimum cob length is 60 mm and the maximum cob length is 120 mm.
(e) The maximum difference in length between the largest and shortest miniature corn cob in the same packing shall not exceed 15 mm.
Permissible deviations with regard to packing and sorting requirements
(12) Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 sweet corn may deviate from the packing and sorting requirements set out in subregulations 6 to 10, with 10%, 15% and 25% respectively by mass. - Reference of the measure

- 2 (1) No person shall sell in the Republic of South Africa
(a) classified garlic --
(iv) unless the containers in which such garlic is presented for sale have been manufactured according to the requirements prescribed in regulation 6;
(vii) if such garlic is packed in a container or in a manner prescribed as a container in which or a manner in which it may not be packed
6. Garlic shall be packed in containers which --
(a) are intact, clean, suitable and strong enough for the packing and normal handling of garlic;
(b) shall not impart a taste or odour to the garlic; and
(c) consist of pockets, cardboard cartons, or boxes.
Packing requirements
7. (a) Classified garlic shall correspond in cultivar, class and size group in the same consignment.
(b) Containers shall be properly closed.
(c) Classified garlic shall, subject to the provisions of subregulation (e), be packed according to the diameter of the garlic in size groups: Provided that the difference in diameter between the smallest and the largest bulb in the same container shall not exceed 15 mm.
(d) The minimum diameter for classified garlic is 30 mm.
(e) Garlic packed in a container in accordance with subregulation (c) may deviate by not more than 10 per cent on a mass per mass basis from the minimum and maximum diameter indicated on the container: Provided that not more than 5 percent of the garlic shall be smaller than the minimum diameter concerned.
(f) Dry, semi-dry and fresh garlic may be marketed loose, in pre-packs, in bunches or in strings, and for the purposes of these regulations such a collection of garlic shall be regarded as a container of garlic. - Reference of the measure

(e) be closed properly in a manner permitted by the nature thereof.

6. (1) Litchis in the same container shall be uniform with regard to ripeness, shape, size, appearance and cultivar.
( 2) Each container shall be packed to capacity.
(3) If litchis are packed in prepacked units, such units shall be packed in a suitable manner in an outer container: Provided that the prepacked units are clean, dry, undamaged and suitable.
(4) Where applicable, not more than 15 per cent of the ventilation holes of the carton containers in a consignment may be blocked by unpunched-out portions and/or litchis.
Packing material
7. If packing material is used inside the container such packing material shall be new, clean, dry, odourless, and not transmit to the litchis any harmful substance or any substance that may be injurious to litchis.
Stacking of containers on pallets
8. If containers containing litchis are palletised --
(a) the pallet shall be clean, undamaged, suitable and not transmit to the litchis any harmful substance or any substance that may be injurious to human health;
(b) pallets manufactured from wood shall be free from bark;
(c) the pallet shall be free from any visible signs of fungal growth;
(d) the pallet shall be free from Arthropod infestation;
(e) the containers shall be stacked firmly and square with each other and with the pallet;
(f) only containers of the same dimensions shall be stacked in the same layer on the pallet; and
(g) containers shall not be stacked upside-down on the pallet.
Strapping of pallet loads
9. (a) A pallet load of containers shall be strapped in a suitable manner.
(b) If containers without lids are being used, a suitable covering may be placed on top of the pallet load of containers before the pallet load is strapped.
Provisions concerning presentation
10. ( 1) Uniformity
The contents of each package must be uniform and contain only litchis of the same origin, variety, quality and size (if sized) and the same degree of ripeness. The visible part of the contents of the package must be representative of the entire contents. - Reference of the measure

11. (1) Container of jam, jelly or marmalade shall:--
(a) be intact, clean , suitable and strong enough for the packing and normal handling of the jam, jelly or marmalade;
(b) be free from rust and serious dents or any other disorders which may detrimentally affect the quality of the product;
(c) not impart any undesirable taste, flavour or hazardous substance to the content
thereof; and
(d) be closed properly in a manner permitted thereof.
(2) Metal surfaces shall be properly lacquered on the inside in the case where quality of the jam, jelly or marmalade may, at any time be impaired due to contact with the metal of the surfaces of a container.
(3) If containers containing jam, jelly or marmalade are packed in an outer container, such outer container shall be clean, neat and intact.
Packing requirements
12. (1) Containers containing different grades of jam, jelly or marmalade shall not be packed together in the same outer container.

- 2. (1) No person shall sell canned fruit in the Republic of South Africa -
(c) unless such product complies with the types of pack referred to in regulation 6;
(d) unless such product complies with the packing media requirements referred to in regulation 7;
Types of pack
6. Canned fruit shall be presented as any one of the following types of pack:
(a) Regular pack which shall consist of fruit packed in a packing medium.
(b) Heavy pack which shall consist of crushed style fruit with or without sweetening ingredients and containing at least 73 percent drained mass.
(c) Solid pack which shall consist of practically all fruit with very little or no free flowing liquid.
Types and standards of packing media
7. (1) (a) Canned fruit shall be packed in any one of the following packing media:
(i) Water, where water is the sole packing medium.
(ii) Water and fruit juice(s), where water and juice from the fruit concerned, or water and any other single fruit juice or water and two or more fruit juices are combined in any proportion to form the packing medium.
(iii) Fruit juice(s), where -
(aa) juice from the fruit concerned, or any other compatible fruit juice, is the sole packing medium; or
(bb) two or more compatible fruit juices, which may include juice from the fruit concerned, are combined to form the packing medium: Provided that the fruit juices may be pulpy, turbid or clear.
(b) Any of the packing media mentioned in paragraph (a) may contain permitted nutritive sweeteners or non-nutritive sweeteners and flavourants.
(2) (a) When permitted nutritive sweeteners are added to water, water and fruit juice(s) or fruit juice(s), the packing media shall be classified on the basis of the cut-out strength as follows:
(i) Very light syrup - Not less than 9°Brix but less than 14°Brix.
(ii) Light syrup - Not less than 14°Brix but less than 18°Brix.
(iii) Syrup - Not less than 16°Brix but less than 20°Brix.
(iv) Heavy syrup - Not less than 18°Brix.
(b) The cut-out strength of any product must comply to the requirements mentioned in paragraph (a): Provided that 33,3 percent of the containers in an inspection sample may deviate by 1 "Brix.
(3) When permitted non-nutritive sweeteners are added to water the packing media shall be declared as -
(a) "packed in water sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners";
(b) "in water sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners";
(c) "packed in water sweetened with 'x'"; or
(d) "in water sweetened with 'x'" [where 'x' indicates the name(s) of the specific nonnutritive sweetener(s)].
(4) When no nutritive sweeteners or non-nutritive sweeteners are added to water, water and fruit juice(s) or fruit juice(s), the packing media shall be declared as -
(a) "packed in water";
(b) "in water";
(c) "packed in water and 'x' juice(s)";
(d) "in water and 'x' juice(s)";
(e) "packed in 'x' juice(s)"; or
(f) "in 'x' juice(s)", as the case may be [where 'x' indicates the name(s) of the specific fruit juice(s)].
REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTAINERS
General
8. (1) Containers for canned fruit shall -
(a) be intact, clean, suitable and strong enough for the packing and normal handling of the canned fruit: Provided that reusable containers shall be properly sterilised;
(b) be free from rust and serious dents or any other disorders which may detrimentally affect the quality of the product;
(c) not impart any undesirable taste or odour to the contents thereof; and
(d) be closed properly and in a manner permitted by the nature thereof.
(2) If containers containing canned fruit are packed in outer containers, such outer containers shall be clean, neat and intact.
PACKING REQUIREMENTS
General
9. (1) Except where otherwise stipulated in these regulations, canned fruit of different kinds, grades or styles shall not be packed together in the same container or outer container.
(2) Canned fruit shall, in the case of Manufacturer's Grade, be packed in A10 or larger containers.
(3) In the case of unspecified canned fruit mixes, the composition of each mix, in descending order, shall be submitted in writing to the Executive Officer.
(4) In the case of unspecified canned fruit, the proposed quality standards shall be submitted in writing to the Executive Officer. - Reference of the measure

- 2. (1) No person shall sell in the Republic of South Africa fresh vegetables, other than imported fresh vegetables referred to in subregulation 2;
(d) unless the fresh vegetables comply with the packing requirements set out in regulations 6, 7, 8 and 9;
Packing requirements
6. (1) Only fresh vegetables of the same quality, cultivar and size, if sizes are prescribed in Part II, shall be packed together in the same container: Provided that different types of fresh vegetables may be packed together in the case of consumer packages.
(2) Class 1 in the same container shall be uniform with regard to colour and ripeness unless determined otherwise in Part II.
(3) Class 2 and Class 3 in the same container shall be uniform with regard to colour unless determined otherwise in Part II.
(4) The visible part of the contents of the container shall be representative of the entire contents.
(5) Each container shall be packed firmly and to capacity.
(6) Notwithstanding the requirements of subregulations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and regulations 7, 8 and 9 fresh vegetables shall comply with the packing and sorting requirements set out in Part II for individual fresh vegetable types.
Packing material
7. If packing material is used inside the containers, such packing material shall ;
(1) be clean, dry, odourless;
(2) be of a quality such as to avoid causing any external or internal damage to the fresh vegetables; and
(3) not transmit to the fresh vegetables any harmful substance or any substance that may be injurious to human health.
Stacking of containers on pallets
8. When containers containing fresh vegetables are palletised ;
(1) the pallet shall be clean, undamaged and suitable and not transmit to fresh vegetables any harmful substance or any substance that may be injurious to human health;
(2) pallet manufactured from wood shall be without bark;
(3) the pallet for imported vegetables shall comply with the requirements of the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM 15);
(4) the pallet shall be free from any visible signs of fungal growth;
(5) the pallet shall be free from Arthropoda infestation;
(6) the containers shall be stacked firmly and square with each other and the pallet;
(7) only containers of the same dimensions shall be stacked in the same layer on the pallet; and
(8) the containers shall not be stacked upside-down on the pallet.
Strapping of pallet loads
9. (1) A pallet load of containers shall be strapped or wrapped in a suitable manner.
(2) If containers without lids are being used, a suitable covering shall be placed on top of the pallet load of containers before the pallet load is strapped. - Reference of the measure
