- 245.Canned (naming the vegetable) shall be the product obtained by heat processing in an appropriate manner before or after being sealed in a container so as to prevent spoilage of the named fresh vegetable after it has been properly prepared, and it may contain sugar, invert sugar or dextrose, in a dry or liquid form, salt, a firming agent (seePart VI of the Nineteenth Schedule), if declared by name on the label, and other suitable ingredients which are not food additives, or food colours as specified in the Nineteenth Schedule or, if the ingredients are food additives, their use shall conform to the limits specified in the Nineteenth Schedule and, if they are food colours, their use and limits shall be as prescribed in Part I of the Seventeenth Schedule

- Except as otherwise provided in these regulations, the term " Pasteurized" when used in association with Milk or milk products shall be taken to refer to the process of heating all the milk:
a) to a temperature of not less than 63 degree c and holding it at such temperature of not less than 30 minutes and immediately thereafter reducing it to a temperature below 4 degree c, or
b) to a temperature of not less than 71.5 degree c and retaining it at such a temperature for at least fifteen seconds or at any other approved time-temperature combination, and immediately thereafter reducing milk to a temperature below 4 degree c and confirming to the following standard;
i) the standard plate count determined by the prescribed method shall be not more than 50,000 millitres,
ii) The coliform count determined by prescribed method shall not be more than 5 per millitre and faecal coliform shall be nil millitre,
iii) The dye-reduction time determined by the methylene blue-keeping quality test by the prescribed method shall be not more than two hours; and
iv) the phosphate test determined by the prescribed method shall give a reading of not more than 10 micrograms of P-nitrophenol for one millitre of milk - Reference of the measure

- 8.-(1) No plant or plant products, harmful organism, beneficial organism, or soil, may be imported into Tanzania, except- control
(a) to the extent, if any, the importation is provided for by this Act; and
(b) in accordance with terms and conditions of a prescribed permit issued under this Act; and
(c) through a point of entry declared under section 14 of this Act.
(2)Any plant or plant product, harmful organism, beneficial organism, or soil imported into Tanzania, shall be clearly identified, declared to an inspector and be made available for an inspection or any subsequent action provided by this Act.
(3)Unless exempted under sub-section (6), no plant (including the living culture of any fungus, bacterium, or any other micro-organisms), plant products, beneficial organisms or any other material or substance provided under this Act may be imported into Tanzania without a prescribed permit..
(4)Unless exempted under sub-section (6), no plant or plant products may be imported into Tanzania without an international phytosanitary certificate stating that it is free from any harmful organisms, and that it complies with the quarantine requirements of Tanzania.
(5) Except as provided for in sub-section (6), no harmful organism, soil, weed or prescribed plant of plant products may be imported into Tanzania.
(6) The Minister may. from time to time, by notice published in the Gazette, exempt from the requirements of subsections (3) and (4) of this section any specified plant or plant products of kind of plant or plant product, provided that he is satisfied that its importation would not present significant threat to the agriculture or natural
environment of Tanzania.
(7) A person who holds a prescribed permit which is issued under this section, shall only be authorized to import the item or items and upon conditions and period, stated in the prescribed permit.
(8) Any plant or plant products, culture or beneficial organism imported under a prescribed permit issued under this section shall be held, grown and maintained in strict compliance with the conditions stated in the prescribed permit, and shall be made available to the inspector for inspection by that inspector, at all reasonable
times and upon request by that inspector.
9.-(1)Notwithstanding any provision in this Act, but subject to subsections (2) and (3), of this section, the Minister may, for the purposes of essential scientific research or experiment, permit the importation into Tanzania, of anything not otherwise eligible for importation under this Act.
(2) The Minister shall not permit anything to be imported under sub-section (1) above unless he is satisfied that its importation will not present significant threat to the agriculture or natural environment of Tanzania.
(3) An importation under this section shall be permitted subject to such safeguards and other terms and conditions as the Minister thinks fit.
10.-(1)Any conveyance and its contents shall, immediately upon its arrival in Tanzania, be made available for inspection, examination and treatment in accordance with this Act, and no person shall enter the conveyance or remove anything from it without the approval of an inspector and until such inspection, examination and treatment has been completed.
(2) Any plant or plant products or other things the subject of this Act arriving in Tanzania in or on a conveyance but not being Imported in Tanzania shall, be brought to the attention of an inspector, be made available for inspection and shall he confined or otherwise dealt with as the inspector directs until the conveyance is outside the jurisdiction of Tanzania.
37.A person who receives any plant, plant product, beneficial organism, harmful organism, plant protection substance, plant resistance improver, soil or any other material or substance to which this Act applies, from outside Tanzania shall, on receipt, notify an inspector, and shall carry out at his own expense and to the satisfaction of the inspector such directions as the inspector may give as to its inspection, treatment, destruction, or any other means of disposal. - Reference of the measure

- 3.5.3 Control of vermin
All buildings in which raw materials, ingredients and the product are stored, or in which the product is handled, prepared, processed or packaged, shall be kept free from insects, rodents, birds and other vermin. The factory and its premises shall be regularly inspected by trained personnel for the evidence of infestation by insects or rodents and for the presence of birds and wild or domestic animals. All rooms where raw materials and ingredients are stored shall, in addition, be rodent proof. Potential breeding sites shall be eliminated.
An effective and continuous programme for pest control shall be established, implemented and maintained.
A site drawing and register of all bait stations shall be kept up to date and open baits shall not be present in processing areas or ingredient, product and empty container and lid stores.
NOTE SANS 10133 (SABS 0133), The application of pesticides in food handling, food processing and catering establishments, may be referred to.
3.5.4 Exclusion of animals

In the case of abalone, all guts, mouths, adhering mucous and epithelium between fringes and the "foot" of the abalone shall be removed.
6.3.1 Preparation
When packed with shells, any growth on the external surfaces of the shells and meats shall be removed. Byssus shall be removed. In the case of abalone cleaning of the flesh shall include removal of the mouth and guts. The adhering mucous and epithelium between fringes and foot shall be brushed off. - 4.7.4 Lobster tails from deep-sea species may, where necessary during preparation for freezing, be treated with an antioxidant, such as sulfur dioxide or ascorbic acid, permitted by regulation under the Foodstuffs,Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972 (Act 54 of 1972), in order to prevent melanosis of the flesh, shell and telson (tail fin). The treatment of the tails shall not cause the flavour of the cooked product to be uncharacteristic of the species concerned.
5.3 Freezing
The stacking of products in freezers (other than plate freezers) shall be away from floor and wall surfaces and shall be such that air circulation between packages is not impeded. The freezing capacity of every plant shall be capable of freezing the product to -5 ̊C or lower within 8 h of its being placed in the freezer. The freezing process shall start with the minimum of delay after preparation and packing. Freezing capacity shall not be overtaxed. The freezing and the frozen storage of the product shall be carried out in a way that will obviate freezer burn. - Reference of the measure
